EXCLUSIVE: Senate GOP poll shows voters aware and concerned about Democrats’ socialist turn

A new national poll conducted for the Senate Republican Conference, chaired by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), and shared exclusively with the Washington Reporter, finds voters have deep reservations about the Democratic Socialist agenda that is fast becoming the face of the Democratic party. 

The survey of 1,280 registered voters, conducted by the firm GrayHouse, shows the Democratic brand being defined by the far left, and independents strongly oppose the policies that have been embraced by Democrats. 

When voters were asked who is most representative of the Democratic Party today, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the self-described socialist, ranked third, trailing only Barack Obama and Kamala Harris and outpacing figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Among Democrats themselves, Mamdani again placed third as the face of their party. 

A senior Senate source told the Reporter that Senator Cotton will be sharing the results with the Republican Conference and encouraging members to speak out about the Democrats’ radical positions. The Senate Republican Conference is the leading communications office for the Republican Senators, and is responsible for coordinating messaging and supporting each Senate Office in its public outreach work. 

Voters are also aware of the policies of the far left. More than half of those surveyed said they had seen or heard “a lot” or “some” about self-described democratic socialists winning primaries and elections in Democratic-controlled cities and districts, and fully three-quarters had heard at least something about the trend.

That leftward pull is showing up in how voters describe the party. Presented with competing descriptions of Democrats today, the single most dominant trait voters chose was “out of touch with ordinary Americans,” which won by a huge margin. “Too focused on cultural issues” and “weak on border security and immigration” followed close behind, and “socialist” ranked among the descriptions voters increasingly reach for when they think of the party.

When respondents considered policies drawn from Democratic Socialist platforms, the proposals generating the greatest concern read like a warning label for the movement’s agenda. The issues voters flagged as most concerning included:

• Gender-transition procedures for minors
• Universal amnesty and citizenship for illegal immigrants
• Emptying prisons and releasing convicted criminals
• Defunding police departments
• Allowing noncitizens to vote
• Wealth taxes on homes and savings
• Government takeover of major industries
• Nationalizing banks

These were the proposals that moved independents most, a signal that the Democratic Socialist program is not just energizing the Republican base but alienating the center.

The survey tested how voters react to the actual statements, platforms, and actions of Democratic Socialist figures and organizations. The messages voters found most concerning centered on:

• Calls for universal amnesty and taxpayer-funded government benefits, including health care, for noncitizens
• The Democratic Socialists of America platform’s call to slash police budgets, abolish mandatory minimums, and release incarcerated people
• Statements opposing all deportations and calling to abolish ICE — even for illegal immigrants who commit violent crimes
• The DSA platform’s call to abolish capitalism and replace the free market with government ownership of major industries

The GrayHouse survey interviewed 1,280 registered voters nationwide from July 9–11, 2026, via an online panel with identity-verification protocols, matched to a commercial voter file to confirm registration and weighted to reflect demographic, geographic, partisan, and political-engagement benchmarks as well as recalled 2024 presidential vote. The margin of error for the full sample is ±2.7 percentage points.
