Rep. Bill Huizenga (R., Mich.) is giving his Democratic opponent, state Senator Sean McCann, a birthday present: a new “country hit” song, in the words of the Huizenga campaign.
For months, Huizenga and his team have labeled McCann the “tax man” due to McCann’s votes in the state legislature. Huizenga’s campaign even released a microsite, Tax Man McCann, that highlights how “families are paying more than ever at the pump, and they have Sean McCann to thank for it. McCann voted to raise Michigan’s gas taxes, and now Michigan drivers are paying 52 cents a gallon in state gas taxes. That’s more than double what drivers pay in high-tax states like New York.”
Now, Huizenga is helping McCann celebrate his birthday in style, with the release of a new song, obtained exclusively by the Washington Reporter.
“Happy birthday, Tax Man Sean,” the chorus goes. “You raised the rates and carried on, Fifty-two cents more at the pump, There goes the paycheck, thump, thump, thump, Electric doubled, candles bright, Twenty-two percent looks good tonight, Raise your glass, let the whole town sing, You gave yourself a raise, cha-ching!”
“Here’s to the man who makes you pay,” the song adds in the bridge verse. “Then votes himself a bigger raise If birthdays came with tax today You’d charge us extra just to say.”
“We wanted to get Sean McCann something special for his birthday, but Michigan taxpayers have already given him enough already,” Calvin Moore, a spokesman for Huizenga’s campaign, told the Reporter. “Between higher taxes and a 22 percent pay increase, this year Tax Man Sean will have to settle for a song.”
The new song ends with wishing McCann a “Happy birthday, Tax Man Sean!”
