EDITORIAL: Dick Durbin’s latest “report” on detention centers is an attempt to cripple ICE

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is at it again. The Senate’s top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee dropped a staff “report” full of anonymous anecdotes from the Dilley family detention center in Texas, painting private contractors and ICE officers as villains running a “top-down culture of cruelty.” The report has numerous allegations that range in seriousness. It includes claims that some children have had “nightmares,” and that “guards entered rooms without knocking.”

None of the allegations are independently validated. The Department of Homeland Security went on the record, as did the company that runs the facility, to deny the claims and point out that the left makes these types of allegations on a daily basis. We have no doubt that in a massive facility holding illegal aliens, there are times when things are not pleasant or ideal for the detained individuals. But it is also true that these individuals have every incentive to make accusations to Democratic staffers, with the hope that it will allow them to leave the facility faster.

Here is what is really going on here. Since President Trump won, Democrats on the far left like Senator Durbin have gone into overdrive to try to get back to the immigration policies under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. They shut down parts of the government for months in a goal to defund ICE. Dick Durbin opposed the Laken Riley Act, which would enable the detention and deportation of illegal aliens charged with certain crimes, including violent ones. The detention facilities, the ICE officers, and the companies that run the facilities are merely collateral damage here.

There is no accusation that Democrats like Dick Durbin wouldn’t make if they thought it would result in releasing illegal aliens and getting back to open borders.

And remember this about Dick Durbin: he loves smearing law enforcement. Look at what Dick Durbin said about American soldiers who guarded terrorists at Guantanamo Bay: “If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime — Pol Pot or others — that had no concern for human beings.”

Dick Durbin is deeply concerned that aliens in detention facilities claim to be having nightmares. But has Dick Durbin ever said anything about the victims of illegal immigration? Take for example Megan Bos, an Illinois victim whose body was found in a garbage can on the property of an illegal alien.

Her mother, Jennifer Bos, had no meaningful contact with Sen. Durbin until she called him out at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing.

Every American should be grateful that we now have a secure border and that the Administration is deporting criminal illegal aliens. But the only way to do that is to use detention centers and work with law enforcement. Durbin should be ashamed of this hatchet job.
