Op-Ed: Nicolee Ambrose: The conservative case for voting for Larry Hogan

  • November 4, 2024

By: Nicolee Ambrose

My name is Nicolee Ambrose, and I’m Maryland’s National Committeewoman for the Republican National Committee (RNC).

I’ll be proudly casting our votes for Donald Trump for President, and also for Larry Hogan for U.S. Senate. I know there are some conservatives who are not on the same page with Hogan on plenty of issues — especially where he stands on Trump. But if Hogan loses, we all lose.

My message to undecided Democrats, Independents and Republicans is actually the same — take a step back and just remember how much better life was with Larry Hogan as our governor. Crime was down, the economy was up, and life was just better. That is what we know he will be able to do for the country as a senator.

Larry Hogan was Governor of Maryland for every single day of Trump’s term, and the years of prosperity here in Maryland were made possible through his strong, bipartisan leadership. Trump and Hogan both cut taxes and made life more affordable here in Maryland. We have Hogan to thank for fully funding our police departments, fighting elitism by cutting unnecessary college degree requirements for thousands of state jobs, and preventing Maryland from becoming a sanctuary state.

Maryland Democrats’ tax-and-spend agenda have meant billions in budgetary challenges and constantly higher taxes. Hogan, however, managed to leave the state with an astonishing $5 billion in surplus. He has delivered for Maryland, and for that he’s earned my support.

I believe Donald Trump will win the Presidency, but his road to victory does not run through Maryland, where Republicans almost never win at all. That’s why, when a Republican can win — and has twice already — it’s our duty to help. Sure, you may not love Larry Hogan’s stance on Trump, but we guarantee you won’t like having Angela Alsobrooks represent you in the Senate.

Hogan’s policies are pro-business, pro-Maryland policies. Angela Alsobrooks’s policies are Kamala Harris’s, or even further to the left. Alsobrooks’s progressive policies would make her the newest member of “The Squad” in Washington, D.C. She governs the biggest sanctuary jurisdiction in Maryland and supports illegal immigrants voting, while Governor Hogan prevented Maryland from becoming a sanctuary state. Her soft on crime policies have wreaked havoc on Prince George’s County, where carjackings have increased 500 percent under her watch. That does not warrant a promotion.

I’ve met Republicans who won’t vote for Larry Hogan because he doesn’t fit the Trump mold. Look, we can’t afford to be single issue voters — there’s too much at stake. Hogan’s got a real chance here to pull off a Republican win in one of the bluest states in America. That’s a chance we should take.
