As Republicans look to Michigan’s Senate race with optimism as Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed weathers scandal after scandal, a new ad — obtained exclusively by the Washington Reporter — suggests that Republicans are eyeing Michigan’s 3rd District as an opportunity to flip another Democratic seat.

West Michigan for Common Sense is airing an ad, backed by $200,000, supporting Republican meteorologist Terri DeBoer in her bid against Rep. Hillary Scholten (D., Mich.). The ad is the first air support that DeBoer is getting since she easily won the GOP’s primary to take on Scholten.

“For decades, we welcomed Terri DeBoer into our homes so that we can plan for the weather,” the narrator says in the ad. “Now she’s ready to serve our community in Congress, standing up for West Michigan values of family, hard work, and community.”

“Terri DeBoer will bring your voice and stable leadership to D.C.,” it concludes. Republicans are excited that DeBoer, as a first-time candidate, nevertheless has massive name ID that candidates normally spend millions of dollars to build up.

“Terri DeBoer has spent more than 30 years earning the trust of West Michigan families,” a spokesperson for West Michigan for Common Sense told the Reporter. “For generations, people across West Michigan have started their mornings with Terri. That kind of trust is hard to come by. This is a seat Republicans can win, and Terri is the candidate who can do it.”

While Michigan’s 3rd District is still on the outer edge of the playing field for Republicans, Inside Elections recently shited its forecast from Solid Democratic to Likely Democratic.
