President Donald Trump’s TrumpRx is a monumental success and fulfills his promise to lower drug costs for patients, Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso (R., Wyo.) told the Washington Reporter.
“President Trump and Republicans promised to make life more affordable for all Americans,” Barrasso said in an interview with the Reporter. “TrumpRx gives patients access to the prescription drugs they need at prices they can afford. Republicans are laser-focused on putting more money in people’s pockets.”
TrumpRx is a comprehensive effort to drive down prescription drug prices by increasing competition and setting deals with pharmaceutical manufacturers. The program is aimed at reducing out-of-pocket costs for patients, expanding access to affordable medicines, and cutting out pharmacy benefit managers (PBM) middlemen that often drive up costs for patients.
Administration officials have pointed out that TrumpRx builds on the president’s broader health care agenda by focusing on affordability and access, particularly for seniors and patients with chronic conditions who face high drug costs. The initiative reflects a shift toward using the market and deals with companies, instead of employing price controls such as the ones Democrats pushed in the Inflation Reduction Act. Such price controls not only failed to lower costs, but also impacted the availability of certain drugs like cancer treatments.
Senate Republicans have made lowering health care costs a central theme of their agenda this Congress, with prescription drug prices near the top of the list. Barrasso, who practiced as an orthopedic surgeon for more than two decades before entering the Senate, has long been active on health care policy, including efforts to expand rural health care access and advance Medicare reforms. Allies say that background gives him particular credibility when it comes to patient costs and access to care.
Barrasso is far from alone in praising the Trump administration’s work to lower health care costs for Americans. Rep. Barry Moore (R., Ala.), who is running to join Barrasso in the Senate, told the Reporter in an interview that TrumpRx is “incredible” and an effective way to lower prices for patients.
