Members of Rep. Tom Kean’s (R., N.J.) family have roots dating back to the American Revolution; one of Kean’s ancestors was New Jersey’s first elected governor.
To counter Kean’s ties, his Democratic opponent, Rebecca Bennett, is hyping up her ties to Bridgewater, New Jersey — “Bridgewater is where my daughters are growing up. It’s where I sit in the school pickup line, run into neighbors at the grocery store, and see firsthand what families need to thrive,” she recently wrote. “I’m proud to call this town home, and I’m running for Congress to fight for the next generation here in Bridgewater and across NJ-07.”
But, property records obtained by the Washington Reporter suggest that Bennett — who owns a home outside of New Jersey’s 7th District — is now renting in Bridgewater. Bennett’s campaign did not respond to request for comment about her housing situation.
While lawmakers are not required to live in their House districts, Bennett’s rental situation is something that Kean can likely hone in on during the final months of their matchup.
National Republicans are already leveraging it against Bennett, claiming that it is the latest piece of evidence that New Jersey voters can’t trust her. “Out of touch Democrat Rebecca Bennett is proving yet again that she’s a self-serving opportunist who will say or do anything for a vote,” Maureen O’Toole, a spokeswoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), told the Reporter. “Bennett’s words aren’t worth the paper they’re written on, and New Jerseyans cannot trust her to represent them in Congress.”
The NRCC, and others working to defend Kean, regularly point out Bennett’s record of covering her tracks. After Bennett was caught deleting a series of tweets that supported the impeachment of President Donald Trump and that expressed her support for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Ma.), O’Toole remarked that “it’s clear Rebecca Bennett is desperately trying to run away from her past and cover up her radical, out of touch agenda.”
Bennett was also under fire for telling voters that she “stopped going to church” because she did not want to be around people who voted for Trump.
