Uncovered footage shows State Representative Angie Nixon, the Florida Democrats’ nominee for Senate against Sen. Ashley Moody (R., Fla.) participating in a protest calling for the release of inmates from the Duval County jail during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jacksonville Community Action Committee (JCAC), a radical leftist group with ties to the Communist Party USA, organized the protest and called for the “mass release” of prisoners in the county jail over concerns of the inmates’ exposure to COVID-19 inside the jail. The group supports defunding the police and other radical policies.
“We are really demanding that [Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office], the mayor, really consider those that are elderly and sick and release them. That’s what needs to happen,” Nixon said while participating in the protest.
The protestors circled the jail in their cars, displaying signs that read “#FreeThemAll,” “no one deserves to die of COVID-19 in jail,” and “COVID-19 = Death Trap. Mass Release Now. #FreeThemAll.”
“The state attorney and Sheriff Williams should hear our demands and free them all,” Neal Jefferson, activist with the Jacksonville Community Action Committee said at the time of the April 2020 protest.
JCAC organizes local protests aimed at fighting for “racial justice” causes and supporting “community control of the police,” and abolishing the Law Enforcement Officer’s Bill of Rights.
But JCAC’s national ties are even more alarming to Florida voters. The Jacksonville-based group is an affiliate of National Alliance Against Race and Political Repression (NAARPR), a radical leftist group that sponsors various protests and other left-wing entities across the country including the Communist Party USA and the Freedom Road Socialist Organization.
JCAC also received grants from Black Voters Matter and NAACP Legal Defense Fund — groups that are funded by George Soros’s Open Society network. In 2024, JCAC received DE$100,000 from the Ford Foundation.
Nixon, who is running for Senate as a Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) candidate, has served as a state representative since 2020. She is known for her noisy political style, most notably embodied by her shouting through a pink bullhorn on the House floor after new congressional maps were approved in April. She later staged a sit-in at Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R., Fla.) office and was arrested. Nixon is expected to stand trial in September on misdemeanor charges.
“Angie Nixon on video demanding prisoners be set free isn’t a gaffe, that’s a reflection of her platform,” a GOP strategist told the Washington Reporter. “The DSA is a millstone around the neck of every Democrat on the ballot this cycle.”
Nixon won the Democratic primary against Alexander Vindman, who drastically outraised her, and she will face Moody in November.
