Op-Ed: Rep. Anthony D'Esposito: President Joe Biden’s Christmas gift is mercy for murderers and rewards for rapists
President Joe Biden’s decision was evil but it was also, in typical Joe Biden fashion, illogical, Rep. Anthony D'Esposito writes.
President Joe Biden’s unprecedented decision to commute the sentences of 37 out of 40 federal death row inmates is the cherry on top of the most shameful, contemptible presidency in modern American history. It should come as no surprise that, as an abject failure for most of his life, Biden would spare the lives of monsters as a Christmas gift to grieving families — but it must be condemned.
President Biden’s decision was evil but it was also, in typical Joe Biden fashion, illogical. Joe Biden is allowing the executions of Dylann Roof, Robert Bowers and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev to proceed. This, as was placing them on death row to begin with, is the correct decision. These animals engaged in conduct so unfathomably evil that they have forfeited their right to remain among us on earth. However, what is utterly inexplicable, is the idea that the 37 other death row inmates have not also forfeited their right to life.
Among those who Biden is showing kindness to are Kaboni Savage, an organized crime leader and drug dealer, convicted on twelve counts of murder, including a firebomb attack that killed four children. Jorge Avila-Torrez was a serial killer and rapist, another recipient of Biden’s clemency, who killed and sexually assaulted two girls under the age of 10, before proceeding to kill a 20 year-old female naval officer in Northern Virginia.
All 40 out of 40 federal death row inmates earned their sentences after a conviction by a jury of their peers, and the exhaustion of a lengthy and costly appeals process. The power of the pardon is reserved for rare instances in which a president feels confident that justice was not served, but President Biden will make no effort to articulate that perspective because he can’t: justice was served.
As an NYPD Detective, I worked to put hundreds of violent criminals behind bars. I worked with grieving families, listening to their tragic stories during investigations, and celebrating with them once justice was finally served. In my nearly 15 years as a cop, and during my time in Congress, I have never witnessed a more heartbreaking betrayal of victims like the one that President Biden shamefully tried to hide from us this Christmas.
Thankfully, the American people saw President Biden for what he is: a man who has disgraced the Oval Office at every turn, and rejected his proxy this past November.
When President Donald Trump assumes office, Americans will know they have a representative who cares deeply about their suffering, and who is prepared to punish their perpetrators — not reward them.
In order to actualize President Trump’s plans to make our cities and streets safe again, he will need to build out his federal law enforcement team with experienced and capable soldiers, ready and willing to defend the American people.
Following President Trump’s impressive mandate, there’s no shortage of talent with the passion — ready and willing to serve and Make America Safe Again. Christmas is coming, but just 26 days late this year.
Rep. Anthony D’Esposito represents New York’s 4th District in Congress.
