EXCLUSIVE: Three law enforcement agencies investigating death threat targeting Trump, senior administration official
Trump, senior official targeted by death threat hours after Charlie Kirk's assassination
Three law enforcement agencies — the FBI, Department of Justice (DOJ), and the Secret Service — are investigating a death threat targeting both President Donald Trump and a senior official in his administration, a source familiar with the matter told the Washington Reporter.
The death threats emanated from an Instagram story, on which a Midwestern woman posted about the need to “8647,” referring to the need to assassinate the president, along with a photo of the senior administration official, whom the Reporter is declining to name.
The official, a political appointee from the Midwest, was contacted by multiple law enforcement agencies, which conveyed that the threat against both the official and the president was credible enough for them to investigate, and that they plan to contact the woman who posted it.
A source familiar with the investigation emphasized to the Reporter how quickly the administration sprung into action; hours after the death threat’s recipient was forwarded the post, the DOJ was alerted to the threat, and the DOJ enlisted both the FBI and the Secret Service in its investigation.
The threat’s poster reportedly knew the intended recipient of her death threat from their time in high school — and the administration’s swift response underscores the potential risks posed to high-level figures in the wake of the assassination of Charlie Kirk in Utah.
“The events of the past week have been beyond tragic and this further illustrates how deep the problem goes,” a GOP veteran told the Reporter. “A world in which administration staffers cannot do their work without fear of violence is unacceptable and has to stop.”
