INTERVIEW: President Donald Trump explains his historic border success

  • January 17, 2026
  • Matthew Foldi

As President Donald Trump enters the second year of his second term, he noted in his latest interview with the Washington Reporter that it’s important for him to “focus[] on talking about things we’ve achieved,” namely his historic successes at securing America’s borders.

“Nobody wants to talk about the border anymore,” the 45th and 47th President of the United States said in an interview. “A week after we close the border, and closed it with nobody coming in, nobody wants to talk about it anymore because it’s fake news. I got elected because of the border, and within a month, I had it in good shape, but within two months, it was totally closed. It’s perfect. Now nobody even tries to come up, and nobody wants to mention it.”

Trump’s description of America’s borders as being “successfully [] concluded” is borne out by the facts. The Reporter recently first covered the historic efforts by Trump, along with Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem and Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Rodney Scott, which included the eighth consecutive month of zero parole releases recorded. The president and the Reporter discussed that article, which the White House shared, during the course of the interview.

Figures from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) obtained exclusively by the Reporter show the difference between the Trump and Biden administrations. In one instance, DHS pointed to “209 USBP apprehensions per day on the southwest border in December — 96% lower than the daily average under the Biden administration, and less than the number apprehended every 1.5 hours under the Biden administration.”

That complements the zero parole releases from December 2025, “compared to 7,041 released by the Border Patrol under the Biden administration along the southwest border in December 2024,” DHS noted in its memo.

“As president,” Trump noted to the Reporter, “you should be given some credit for things that have successfully been concluded.”
