Unsurprisingly, he’s leaning on these ties in his ELC pitch: “I believe my time in the U.S. Air Force, as a businessman, as Montana’s State Auditor, and my strong relationships with Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Scalise, Whip Emmer, and Republican Conference Chair Stefanik have given me the resources, relationships, and background to be an exceptional candidate and team player who can bolster our class in the 119th Congress,” he wrote to his colleagues, in a letter obtained by the Reporter.
“As your freshman representative, I will work tirelessly to enact President Trump’s America First agenda and amplify the voices of our conservative base. I promise that I will always lead with integrity, guts, and results – values I bring from my military and public service experiences. We have an historic opportunity to secure our borders, defend our constitutional rights, and promote policies that put Americans first. I am pro-Trump, pro-wall, and pro-America.”
His campaigning took him all across his Montana district, as well as to those of returning Reps. Young Kim (R., Calif.), Rick Crawford (R., Ark.), Vince Fong (R., Calif.), David Valadao (R., Calif.), and Ryan Zinke — who represents the other half of Montana. Downing also campaigning for Republicans who came up just short in this month’s elections, including Derrick Anderson, Scott Baugh, Kevin Lincoln, and others. He visited those districts with Scalise and Johnson, an early indication that House GOP leadership is eager to tap the potential of the soon-to-be-freshman lawmaker, and that his voice is an asset in swing districts.
