“He is swindling donors”: Democratic candidate’s campaign panned in home stretch

Even though polls and prognosticators show that Rep. Nick LaLota (R., N.Y.) leads New York Democrat John Avlon, Avlon is still set on “swindling donors,” Republican strategists told the Washington Reporter.

“He’s got no shot in this race, and he’s basically lighting donors’ money on fire,” a top GOP strategist said of Avlon The Democrat certainly has raised more than $2 million between various pro-Avlon efforts. 

Despite Avlon’s lead in the money race, polling shows LaLota leading Avlon by at least 8 percent, well outside the margin of error. Avlon’s multi-million dollar war chest and high-level media profile have kept the race competitive.

“Long Island’s East End is trending red,” the New York Post reported recently. In the same poll in which LaLota led by almost double digits, President Donald Trump led Kamala Harris by 6 percent; Long Island districts are critical to the fight for control of the House, with Democrats putting Avlon on their “Red to Blue” list.

Avlon could be dragged down by voters taking out their anger at New York City Mayor Eric Adams on state Democrats. Avlon praised Adams shortly after Adams won his contentious mayoral primary in 2021. The Washington Reporter previously covered how Adams boasts a 9 percent approval rating on average across swing districts in New York State.
