Iowa Democrats are “too extreme to govern our incredible country,” a top GOP House candidate has told the Washington Reporter.

Former State Representative Joe Mitchell, the likely Republican nominee to succeed Rep. Ashley Hinson (R., Iowa),, told the Reporter that “Democrat candidates must have gotten the message to hide their radical points of view as much as possible,” shortly after House Democrats in the Iowa legislature voted against parental rights

But, Mitchell added, “voters won’t be fooled.” His likely opponent State Rep. Lindsay James (D) was absent during a recent vote that would support parents raising their children consistent with their biology; the Iowa Standard first highlighted the Democrats’ controversial stances.

Another lawmaker, State Rep. Josh Turek (D), is running to challenge Hinson in the Hawkeye State’s open Senate seat; he voted with Iowa Democrats in opposing the legislation.

Turek is running as the establishment-backed candidate against State Sen. Zach Wahls (D). He has also skipped high-profile votes, including skipping (along with James) a vote on legislation that would classify pregnant people in state law as “women” and not as “pregnant people.”

Hinson, who has leaned heavily on her experience as a working mom in her statewide race, is likely to highlight Turek’s vote, should he win the Democrats’ nomination.
